Floor Levelling Sydney - Creating a Smooth, Level Subfloor

Floor Levelling Sydney is the process of identifying humps or low spots in concrete slabs that may pose an issue for your flooring further down the track, and levelling them. This is primarily to prepare the slab for laying floor coverings with minimal tolerances.

There are certain standards that exist within Australia for levelling floors. New concrete slabs must have a minimum of 10mm maximum tolerance within any room and 20mm tolerance over the entire building footprint when installing timber floating, direct stick and parquetry floors.

This is a critical step in the laying of new floorboards to ensure the longevity and durability of the product. If not levelled properly, your floorboards will feel uneven underfoot and it could lead to a number of issues including settling and movement which could result in cracking or buckling.

The best way to ensure a smooth, level subfloor is through the use of self levelling compound. This is a polymer modified cement which has high flow characteristics and does not require excessive amounts of water to be added for placement. It is a great solution for those with existing sunk floors and will help to create a level surface prior to the installation of interior floor coverings.

It is also an excellent way to bring sunken areas up to a uniform height so that they can be poured over with fresh concrete. This is a more costly method, but if the difference between the high and low spots is small, it may be worth investing in this option.

There are several different self levelling compounds that can be used. Some are water based while others are acrylic-based. They all have their own benefits and can be a good choice depending on your particular requirements.

If you have a flat concrete floor, you can achieve a smooth, level subfloor with self-levelling compounds. These compounds are liquids that mix with the concrete to form a paste or slurry, which can be troweled or spread and feathered to create a smooth finish.

They are typically a more cost effective alternative to traditional concrete for creating a level surface prior to the installation of floorcoverings. They are also easy to apply and have an attractive finish.

Some of the more popular self-leveling compounds include ARDEX latex and water based options as well as other brands such as Grip-Rite. They are suitable for both interior and exterior applications and offer an aesthetically pleasing and durable final surface.

You can also use an overlay to help to level uneven floors. They are a thin layer of leveling compound that is applied to the floor in thicknesses starting from 3mm. They are more expensive than the self-levelling alternatives but will produce a more even finish and will prevent scuffing from heavy foot traffic.

It is important to note that not all self-leveling compounds are created equal and some can actually cause damage to your concrete subfloor by causing cracking and shifting of the slab. Some are more flexible and more pliable than others, so it is important to check the manufacturers’ instructions before applying the levelling compound to ensure that you are using the right one for your specific needs.
